Vitamins, Medicine (pre and post op)

Ugh.....with all the medication and vitamins I will be taking after surgery.......it will be really important for me to make sure I keep on schedule.

I have set up alarms in my phone to remind me!

Pre-Op Medicine Prep
In order to make surgery safer, there are medications you need to stop taking before hand.

I will need to stop taking my Metformin 38 hours prior to surgery and my birth control 2 weeks before surgery.  I also will not be able to take the birth control for at least 4 weeks after surgery.

You also should stop taking all non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs like aspirin, Advil, ibuprofen, Motrin, and Aleve, at least 2 weeks prior to surgery.  You should also avoid these after surgery.  From now on, only acetaminophen based products.

Don't worry......I will still be able to take my anti-depressant!

Vitamin/Medicine Schedule
  • 7am:  Omeprazole, Synthroid, Wellbutrin
  • 8am:  500mg calcium citrate
  • 10am:  both Multivitamin and Biotin
  • 12pm:  500mg calcium citrate
  • 2pm:  500mg calcium citrate

Post Op Medicine
On the day of your final appointment, your surgeon will probably call in a prescription for Omeprazole and Promethazine.

Omeprazole is used for 90 days after surgery.  Thankfully, I can now swallow this and not open the capsule and put it in a teaspoon of unsweetened applesauce!  Omeprazole is a proton-pump inhibitor and decreases the amount of acid made in the stomach which then helps to prevent and promote proper stomach healing after surgery.  These need to be taken at least 1 hour before a meal.

Promethazine is used to control nausea and vomiting that may occur after surgery and also will help relieve pain after surgery.  It should only be taken IF you are experiencing nausea.  Can be taken at bedtime the night before surgery to relieve anxiety and produce a quiet sleep.

During the hospital stay, you may end up having heparin shots in your stomach to help prevent blood clots.
